As a proud Muslim, this is how I view "The Gay Marriage":
It's human nature to continuously reinvent the wheel. Often, we want to go against what parents, culture and religions teach. This is absolutely OK, though risky. Often we lose track of "WHY" things are the way they are. It's no longer enough to know the "WHATs & HOWs " . So we start questioning habits or norms and sometimes ignore them. This questioning attitude is healthy on both individual and society levels because by time good rules could get corrupted or superseded. Quran encourages such questioning attitude.
Quran chapter 2 verse 170:
"And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing." Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?"
The in built human nature of asking "WHY" is recorded in Quran while narrating the very first story of Adam and Eve, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon them. That's when Allah directly warned them about their enemy (Satan) and directly instructed them to NOT eat a particular fruit. But they did believe their enemy 'Satan' and they did eat from that fruit. As a result, they lost their godly cover and got naked. They also temporarily lost the privilege of being in the paradise and landed on earth. Eventually, Allah forgave them both for disobeying him with "good intentions".
Allah knew from beginning that Adam and Eve, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon them, will reinvent the wheel and disobey him for their own good reasons and intentions, still he let them go through the experience. That is to burn their fingers, as we say, and painfully learn to heartedly adopt Allah's guidance. This experience, mistakes and sufferings made them appreciate Allah's guidance and become better believers. If Allah was OK with Adam and Eve following their inbuilt nature of wanting to know "WHY" by trying different paths with good intentions, shouldn't we?
The stories in Quran are part of historical events. History knowledge is not just a hobby. History can explain our present and our present can explain the history. Quran chapter 12 verse 111 says:
"There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the Quran a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe."
The history of homosexuality in Quran is not good. Quran talks of a majority gay community that was not as peaceful, tolerant and innocent as the minority gay communities known to us nowadays. Quran chapter 27 verse 56 says:
"But the answer of his people was not except that they said, "Expel the family of Lot from your city. Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure."
In case of gay marriage, Quran is very clear about it. Quran is against homosexuality. I believe that's the case in most of the world's major religions. Quran chapter 7 verses 80 and 81 says:
"And [We had sent] Lot when he said to his people, "Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds? Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people."
Nevertheless, much of the world has decided to reinvent the wheel and legalize gay marriage (homosexuality), mainly because of the constitutional rights. There are also some shy medical, social and psychological studies that supports homosexuality. In this regard, its important to note:
1- Gay Marriage is unprecedented in the history. It's a pilot project. It's an experiment.
2- While there are lots of historical knowledge and data about majority anti-gay societies to enable scientists to study and draw conclusions, there is no credible historical data about majority pro-gay societies. Hence, we are not comparing Apple to Apple.
3- Gay Marriage needs more serious scientific studies. Without reliable background data, such studies would be mostly speculations and theories but not facts.
4- Religious people need to know it's no longer enough to justify banning homosexuality by referring to holly scriptures. You must resort to science, which is the miracle of the time. Synagogues, churches are Masjids must invest in this regard.
5- Experts need to study consequences of homosexuality becoming a norm and majority of people becoming gay. Seems to me, life will seize.
6- Being a homosexual doesn't mean one seizes to be a Muslim. Homosexuality, as per Quran, is a great sin just like drinking alcohol or practicing adultery. But you could seize to be a Muslim the moment you knowingly reject Allah's clear opposition to homosexuality.
7- What you do privately is your business. But what you do publicly is community's business. So LGBT community must show tolerance towards their opposition. Being against LGBT shouldn't not be demonized.
8- There is a tendency nowadays, particularly in the English-speaking world to assume that gay marriage is the natural and normal condition of humanity, that any departure from it is either a disease to be cured or a crime to be punished for. I don’t share that view. People must be allowed to oppose and criticize LGBT communities.
As a proud Muslim, I am against homosexuality or gay marriage but I respect those who oppose me. We shall continue to analyse pro-gay society's pilot project for generations, diagnose the background data and make factual conclusions before criticizing Quran.
